Pakistan's interior minister has granted the extradition of Shabbar Abbas, accused of the murder of his daughter Saman in Novellara in April 2021. A Pakistani Interior Ministry official confirmed that Shabbar will be "brought to Italy by charter plane." In an attempt to block the extradition, Abbas's lawyer filed an appeal with the High Court.
The Ministry of the Interior outlined the details of the case to the Government, which approved the extradition request. After the decision, the same ministry issued an order on August 16, requiring Adiala Jail Rawalpindi to transfer custody of Shabbar Abbas to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which would then facilitate his handover to the Italian government. "According to the legal system, Shabbar Abbas will be handed over to the Italian authorities," an official source assures.
In an attempt to stop the extradition, Akhtar Mehmood, Shabbar Abbas' legal representative, filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The application requested the suspension of the transfer of its client to the Italian authorities. Today the chief judge of the IHC, AamirFarooq, presided over the hearing. It did not issue a suspension order in response to the petition and adjourned the case.
"The court issued notices in response with any precise dates for the hearing," Akhtar Mehmood told ANSA.
On July 4, a magistrate in Islamabad granted the Italian government's request to extradite Shabbar Abbas.
Shabbar Abbas and his wife Nazia Shaheen, both accused of killing their daughter, fled to Pakistan. He was arrested at the end of November 2022 while his wife was still at large.
