The price of electricity on international markets jumps to 138 euros per MWh and Italian families will feel the effect in the next bills. Nomisma Energia estimates an increase of 7-10% from the first of October, coinciding with the latest quarterly update of Arera, the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment.

In the week from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 August, GME recorded an average purchase price of electricity (PUN) of 137.67 euros per MWh, up 29.9% compared to about 106 euros in the previous week. The volumes of electricity traded directly on the GME exchange amounted to 4.1 million MWh, with liquidity at 72.4%. The average selling prices, communicates the Electricity Markets Manager, have varied between 136.25 euros per MWh in the North and 144.16 euros per MWh in Sicily. "If these prices remain it is certain that there will be an increase on the next electricity bill," said the president of Nomisma Energia, Davide Tabarelli. "From the first of October there will be a jump between 7 and 10% of electricity tariffs for the last quarter, the first increase, a bit heavy, of 2023", he stressed, explaining that there has been "an increase in gas prices" in recent weeks, with a return above 30 euros per megawatt hour and "automatically those of electricity rise" and "half of Italian electricity production is made with gas", pointed out the president of Nomisma. Tabarelli added that at the beginning of September the ARERA "will determine the August price of gas and there will be only a slight increase below 2%". However, "the indications for next winter give international prices 40% higher than the current ones and if they were to occur this winter's gas rates would be up to 20% higher than the current ones", warned Tabarelli. Exactly one year ago, gas in Europe reached an all-time high of 340 euros per megawatt-hour in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Then the downward phase began after Europe itself managed to gradually break away from Russia's grip on supplies. Today on the Amsterdam market, reference for Europe, the methane futures with delivery in September closed down by 8% to 35 euros per Megawatt hour.
