Wild blackberries are on the rise - they can also become a problem in the garden

Highlights: A lot of rain is one of the causes of excessive blackberry growth. If you are also affected by it in the garden, you should not reach for protective clothing and scissors too late. Dead trees allow a greater incidence of light in the forest due to fewer needles and foliage. The proliferating plants not only make the forest more impenetrable, but also displace young tree offspring. The roots of the blackberries also know no stopping underground and thus take away light and space from other plants if they are given free rein.

A lot of rain is one of the causes of excessive blackberry growth. If you are also affected by it in the garden, you should not reach for protective clothing and scissors too late.

Anyone who likes to nibble on blackberries in the forest will be happy to hear this news: The growth of shrubs has increased sharply in recent years, especially in Bavaria's forests. The reasons for this are less beautiful: As the Bund Naturschutz (BN) reported to the German Press Agency, not only extensive rain, but also too much nitrogen in the soil and dead trees are causes of the lush wild growth.

According to the dpa report, the high nitrogen content in the soil is due to road traffic and agriculture, i.e. the heavy fertilization of the fields. Dead trees allow a greater incidence of light in the forest due to fewer needles and foliage - the berry bushes and small animals that hide underneath are happy about this. The proliferating plants not only make the forest more impenetrable, but also displace young tree offspring.

Even in the home garden, some people know the problem with wild blackberry bushes. Since the plants grow very quickly every year, despite the joy of a larger berry harvest, one should intervene in time to curb uncontrolled growth. Because not only do the thorny tendrils spread, but the roots of the blackberries also know no stopping underground and thus take away light and space from other plants if they are given free rein for too long. The removal of the branches can then become tedious and painful.

How to remove uncontrolled growth in the garden

If you want to tackle the tendrils without chemicals, you should first protect yourself well from the thorns with the right clothing - so be sure to wear gloves, long-sleeved and with long trouser legs and dense fabric, preferably also safety goggles.

Then a rigorous pruning is carried out with rose shears, pruning shears or a brush cutter down to about 20 centimeters above the ground. With a spade and pickaxe, you should then work the soil to such an extent that you can grab the roots and tear them out. Sometimes it is enough for this to pull on the above-ground shoots. If the plant is not to grow back at all, a weed cutter can also be helpful, which lifts out the whole plant.

In order for the blackberries not to spread strongly again in the future, you should prune them regularlyand remove wild shoots. The plant residues go to the green waste or in the organic waste, but not on the compost. And don't worry about the fruits: the plants grow back quickly.
