Mexico's Supreme Court of Justice has decriminalized abortion in all 32 states of the country. The highest judicial authority, reads a brief message on X, declared "unconstitutional the legal system that penalizes abortion in the Federal Criminal Code, because it violates the rights of women and people ingestation".
The ruling voted unanimously by the 11 members of the Court invalidates articles and normative parts of the Federal Criminal Code that provide for imprisonment for women who have abortions, effectively decriminalizing the termination of pregnancy throughout the national territory.
The judgment, which will apply retroactively, will have to be respected by any judicial and administrative authority, in particular by the staff of the health institutions involved in the practice of abortion and by the agents of the Public Prosecutor who receive complaints about these facts.
Two years ago, the Court declared the criminalization of abortion unconstitutional.
