As we all know, sour is funny. Now, a net of lemons from the discounter gave a customer an enjoyable shopping experience – on Reddit it caused amusement.

Berlin – Shopping in supermarkets and discounters can sometimes cause a surprise. For example, an unbelievable price at the Lidl supermarket checkout caused amusement. A Netto customer, on the other hand, was anything but pleased with his discovery in the checkout area and recently complained on "X" (formerly Twitter).

Now an Aldi customer was astonished when he weighed his purchased lemons at home: A net full of lemons weighed a lot more than indicated on the label. He shared this positive experience directly with the Reddit community. They were amused and speculated about the reasons for the unexpected extra.

Aldi customer gets more than expected – Reddit users provide explanation

"Bought yesterday at Aldi. Something like this has never happened to me before," the customer writes. The posted image shows the net of lemons on a scale. According to the label, it should be 500 grams. However, the scale shows much more – 819 grams. For the extra 319 grams more, some users have a seemingly simple explanation, while others joke:

  • "It just loses weight over time".
  • "They mean without the shell".
  • "There's always more than enough sour."
  • "It's a very solid network."
  • "Either a few too many were mistakenly packed into the net, or the net is made of the densest plastic I've ever seen."
  • "Pickling. When the juice has been drained, 500 g remains".

Other users report a similar experience: "Just weighed my freshly bought vegetable onions. 900 grams instead of 750 grams as indicated. Nice," they say. "This also happens with broccoli," writes another.

However, more "shrinkflations" are making the rounds on social networks

On social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, some customers have reported the opposite in the past. In the current inflation, they discovered more and more cases of so-called "shrinkflation" (or German: "Schrumpflation"). The phenomenon in which, as the Hamburg Consumer Advice Centre writes, manufacturers carry out hidden price increases by simply reducing the content of their products while maintaining the same price.

For example, the weighing of an Edeka salmon caused a nasty surprise. In the case of a Netto customer, on the other hand, a lentil pack left her speechless. However, consumer advocates also warned of poorer food quality with rising prices. In the case of so-called "skimpflation", the food industry saves on valuable ingredients and thus doubles its profit margin. (Vivian Werg)
