From cinemas to concerts, from theaters to itinerant or sporting events up to exhibitions: the varied world of entertainment is healing from the pandemic contagion, recovers spectators compared to the generalized closures of the covid era and in some cases even recovers the gap with the period before the lockdown. With over 3 million events, up 80% on 2021 and with 3 billion in spending, up 187% on the previous year, for 205 million spectators also up by 150%, 2022 marked a clear recovery for the sector with signs of realignment at 2019 levels. This is the picture that emerges from the SIAE Report 2022, whose data also allow us to estimate already a 2023 in clear recovery on pre-pandemic levels and a 2024 with a positive sign.
Compared to the data on the value generated, 3 billion euros in 2022, and which saw a decrease of 20% compared to 2019, the loss in the first six months of the year would be halved (-9%) Not to mention that the single-digit decline does not contain the predictably positive numbers of the summer months: in short, "we can hope to close 2023 with a clear recovery on pre-pandemic levels and lay the foundations to aim for a 2024 with the positive sign" announced today Matteo Fedeli, general director of SIAE, presenting the 2022 report.
If the Italian public has started to go out and attend events and shows, compared to the pre-pandemic period, participation in concerts of light, pop and rock music but also jazz has grown in 2022. With Vasco Rossi who dominated live, Avatar at the Cinema and Notre Dame de Paris at the Theater.
From the spring of 2022, it emerges from the Report that this year the SIAE has also drawn up with the collaboration of Agis, the Italian General Association of Entertainment, since the outdoor events were reopened, some sectors have even scored a growth in the number of shows compared to 2019, that is, before the pandemic, such as pop music concerts, which increased by more than 70% on the last year before the pandemic, also thanks to the rescheduling of events suspended between 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. But jazz concerts have also grown, as well as all the activities included by the traveling show. In particular, on the entertainment side for pop music concerts in 2022, the return of flame speaks of over 31 thousand events (+182% on the previous year), a figure that far exceeds the level of supply before the pandemic (+70% on 2019).
Part of this growth, notes the SIAE, can be explained by the rescheduling of concerts initially scheduled for 2020 or 2021. As for the demand, the interest of the public has really exploded: there were almost 20.9 million spectators registered in 2022, with an exponential growth compared to 2022 of 573% and 65.7% on '19. At the top of the box office Vasco Rossi who in May 2022 brought in concert well over 110 spectators in Trento and then always between 60 and 80 thousand in the following concerts in Imola, Milan and Rome and Ligabue who in June detached over 100 thousand tickets in the concert at the Campo Volo arena.
This return desire for aggregation of Italians, however, clashes with an increasingly alarming trend of closure of entertainment spaces. A phenomenon that, according to the report, mainly affects the regions of the South but, even if to a lesser extent, Central Italy.
With this in mind, Siae and Agis have decided to start together a census on theaters and in general on performance venues that have remained closed to the public. The goal, explained the presidents of the two associations, Salvatore Nastasi and Francesco Giambrone, is to collect data to make constructive proposals to the government to strengthen the whole system.
