In the 2023/9 edition of Öko-Test, color detergents in powder form are being tested. Four are "good", but three very well-known brands are not convincing.

  • Öko-Test has tested 25 colour detergents in powder form.
  • After all, the four best ones receive the grade "good".
  • Three well-known brands fail – because they contain too many harmful substances.

Clean and fragrant coloured laundry that retains its radiant colours for as long as possible – you need the right colour detergent for this. At Öko-Test, 25 of these products are tested in powder form. Most brands are rated rather mediocre. Ironically, three well-known manufacturers are the losers in the test - this is mainly due to the many pollutants, as HEIDELBERG24 reports.

Detergents at Öko-Test: Well-known brands lose out in the test

Many brands of color detergents in the test did not really convince the experts at Öko-Test – 18 of the products only received a "satisfactory". Almost all of them criticize phosphonates and plastic compounds, the effects of which are still too little known, but which are difficult to degrade. The losers at Öko-Test did not fail completely, but only received a "sufficient". When using laundry detergent, there are a few mistakes to avoid.

In the Ariel and Coral brands, the experts find isoeugenol – the fragrance can trigger allergies. Capsules, powder or rather liquid – which detergents do you really need? With a wide range of remedies, the purchase seems complicated, but it is only necessary to observe a few principles. This also means that there are not too many harmful substances in the powder, as is the case with the losers in the Öko-Test:

  • Ariel Color
  • Coral Color Laundry Detergent Optimal Color
  • Lenor Color Laundry Detergent Amethyst Blossom Dream

Öko-Test takes a close look at powder detergents: The test winners

Öko-Test finds almost no harmful ingredients in the four test winners, all of whom are rated "good". The only downside: the washing performance leaves something to be desired. In almost all of them, loosened dirt accumulates on the seams again. It should be said that all products have problems with stubborn stains such as ballpoint pens, motor oil, lipstick or make-up.

A plastic compound is also found in Frosch's detergent as a questionable ingredient, but this is said to have disappeared from the recipe by the end of the year. Nevertheless, the product still lands in 2nd place in the overall ranking. These are three of the test winners:

Pollutant in detergents – good washing performance, bad for the environment

Clothes are worn close to the body. You don't want to have any residues of detergent in the fibers that could cause allergies or otherwise be harmful to the organism or the environment. Click here for the full test report of Colorwaschmittel at Öko-Test issue 2023/9 (subject to a fee).

In the conventional color detergents in the test, the surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate is negative – this cleans laundry better, but it is difficult to biodegrade. It is prohibited in the Blue Angel criteria because of its environmental harmfulness – and the experts at Öko-Test also deduct points for it. Popular brands also perform poorly in the detergent test by Stiftung Warentest. More reviews can be found here. (resa)
