After Shanghai, the traveling exhibition Gucci Cosmos arrives in London, in the space 180 Studios, 180 The Strand, offering an immersive experience from October 11 to December 31. A celebration of the maison's connection with the capital of the United Kingdom, Gucci Cosmos takes visitors on a journey that tells 102 years of the maison's history and its Florentine roots.
The story of Gucci can be said to begin in London in 1897, when the young Guccio Gucci found work as a porter and lift boy in the Savoy Hotel of the city. Carrying guests' luggage through the famous revolving doors and operating the elevator to reach the rooms and suites, the young Guccio got to know the tastes and lifestyle of the international elite, assimilating new ideas and more cosmopolitan cultural interests. Inspired by these experiences and determined to make his name a symbol of the art of luggage, Guccio returned to Florence and in 1921 founded the homonymous leather goods, which was followed by the opening of the first Gucci store in Via della Vigna Nuova.
Gucci Cosmos explores how Guccio's codes and spirit have materialized in Guccio's most iconic designs and how these era-defining classics have always inspired and been reinterpreted by its visionary designers. The exhibition illustrates how the progressive vision of the maison, anchored in the best Italian tradition and craftsmanship, allowed Gucci not only to be a mirror of the times, but to define them thus exerting its influence on society and aesthetics of that historical period. Conceived and created by the famous British artist Es Devlin and curated by critic Maria Luisa Frisa, this journey through Gucci's past, present and future moves through a series of worlds that bring together treasures, many of them unpublished from the Gucci archive, a living and pulsating repository and center of activity of the creative teams of the maison, housed in the fifteenth-century Palazzo Settimanni in Florence.
