With "One Piece", Netflix has succeeded in creating an anime adaptation that does exactly what it is supposed to do: get newbies and greenhorns on board. The live-action series starring Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd and Mackenyu is overflowing with charm.
The anime series "One Piece" (as well as the associated manga series) have been enriching not only Japanese pop culture for almost 25 years. The fact that Netflix's live-action series adaptation now offers the perfect introduction came as quite a surprise in view of earlier adaptations such as "Cowboy Bebop (2021)" or "Death Note".
Matt Owens ("Marvel's Luke Cage") and Steven Maeda ("Helix"), the two showrunners of "One Piece (2023)," took a big risk to stay so close to the original sound with such an over-the-top swashbuckler story. The eight-episode first season, which premiered on the streaming platform on August 31, is full of anime references. The nicest pirate in the world and his crew all have a dream that they can achieve through the power of friendship.
In addition to the courage to be childish, which probably makes the new "One Piece" a suitable material for "Pirates of the Caribbean" fans, the greatest treasure is certainly the ensemble. It is led by Mexican youngster Iñaki Godoy ("Who murdered Sara?", "The Imperfects"), who succeeds in the course of the season with us viewers as he does with his gang: First he gets on our nerves with his "toxic positivity" until we simply learn to love him.
