Whether in a bed or in a pot, rosemary needs special care during the winter. Discover how to protect your herb from cold, wet and dry.

Rosemary is a popular culinary herb that not only tastes delicious but also offers many health benefits. But how can you overwinter rosemary so that it sprouts fresh and green again next year? This depends on whether you are growing the rosemary in the garden bed or in a flower pot.

Overwintering rosemary: How to do it in a bed

If you have planted your rosemary in a bed, you should only let it overwinter in mild locations or wine-growing areas. This is because rosemary is not completely hardy and can only tolerate temperatures of minus eight to ten degrees Celsius.

Some varieties are even more sensitive to frost. To protect your rosemary in the bed, you should follow these steps:

  • Cover the root area with leaves and the crown with fir twigs or garden fleece (promotional link). This protects the rosemary from cold and wet.
  • Shade the rosemary from the sun. This prevents it from drying out in late winter, when the air warms up but the ground is still cold.
  • Choose a variety that can tolerate cold temperatures: Veitshöchheim, Arp or Blue Winter.

If your rosemary grows in a pot, the procedure is a little different.

Overwintering rosemary in a pot

When you cultivate your rosemary as a potted plant, you have more control. You should bring rosemary into your home as late as possible – in mild locations even at Christmas. There it should overwinter in a bright location at a maximum of ten degrees Celsius. An unheated greenhouse, the stairwell or a bright basement room are equally suitable for this.

To care for your rosemary in the pot, you should consider the following points:

  • Water the rosemary moderately but regularly. The pot ball should never dry out completely, but it should not be too wet either.
  • Do not fertilize the rosemary during overwintering. It does not need any additional nutrients during this time.
  • Do not cut back the rosemary. It is only in the spring that you can get it in shape a bit.

If you don't have a suitable place to hibernate, you can also leave your rosemary outdoors. To do this, however, you need to protect it particularly well:

  • Wrap the pot with bubble wrap or a jute bag to insulate the pot from frost.
  • Cover the rosemary with fir brushwood. This protects the plant from wind and snow.
  • Place the pot in a sheltered place, for example under an eaves on the wall of the house. In this way, you avoid strong temperature fluctuations.

Rosemary is a wonderful herb that you can easily get through the winter with a little care and protection. Whether in a bed or in a pot, make sure that the rosemary does not get too cold, too wet or too dry.

Then you can enjoy its fragrance and taste again next year.
