For the classic side dish, you need these ingredients in addition to potatoes:

  • 250 ml whipped cream
  • 250 ml milk
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1 kg waxy potatoes
  • 2 tsp butter
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 200 g Emmental, grated

It's easy to prepare, thanks to these step-by-step instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C fan.
  • Mix the whipped cream, milk, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Set aside.
  • Wash and peel the potatoes and cut them into thin slices.
  • Grease a baking dish first with butter and then rub it with a clove of garlic. Layer half of the potato slices in a tile-like manner and pour over some of the whipped cream and milk mixture.
  • Layer remaining potato slices on top and cover with remaining seasoned cream.
  • Sprinkle with grated Emmental cheese and bake in a preheated oven for 50 minutes until the potatoes are cooked.
  • The potato gratin tastes great with roast beef with onions, fish in a salt crust or as a vegetarian main course.
