In autumn, the days get shorter, but that doesn't have to mean the end of vegetable cultivation. You can still sow the following varieties.

When it comes to peppers, tomatoes and zucchini, you have to resort to either imported goods or fruit from the greenhouse, but there are still plenty of new vegetables to thrive in October. While it is usually too cold for sowing for some vegetables and herbs from October onwards, there are still plants that grow in the bed even at lower temperatures.

  • Peas: Special winter peas are sown in autumn or late autumn and can be harvested from April or May, as reported by the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR). Varieties such as "Sima" are particularly suitable for this. The greens of sugar snap peas can also be eaten and used in salads.
  • Lamb's lettuce: As a typical winter lettuce, lamb's lettuce likes it cool and can still be sown in October. Lamb's lettuce is extremely resistant and thrives in both sun and partial shade. In autumn and winter, fresh salad vegetables can be harvested continuously, as My Beautiful Garden points out.
  • Winter purslane: Autumn temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius are ideal for the annual leafy vegetable. When sowing, make sure to keep a sufficient distance.
  • Arugula: The tart, spicy lettuce grows in similar conditions to lamb's lettuce.
  • Spinach: Although the vegetable takes up a relatively large amount of space in the bed, it can still be sown until the beginning of October. The distance between the rows should be between 20 and 35 centimeters.
