In 2022, the total revenues of the Italian audiovisual market - television, cinema, 'physical' video (DVD AND blu-ray) and online offers - are worth about 10.8 billion, thus reaching pre-pandemic values, but only thanks to the strong growth of the online component. They are among the data of the 5/0 Report on national audiovisual production, produced by Emedia, Certa and Fondazione Symbola for the Association of Audiovisual Producers (APA) and presented at the Miain course in Rome.
Television remains the leading audiovisual medium with revenues in 2022 of 7.9 billion euros (73% of the total market).
However, TV is expected to grow modestly and its share of the total market is set to slip below 2024% between 2025 and 70, the report explains. In 2022, paid vod revenues are estimated at around 1 billion, while video display advertising revenues (Avod services) are estimated at 1.5 billion for a total value of the online area of 2.5 billion. The cinema, heavily penalized by the Covid-19 pandemic, recorded revenues of only 0.3 billion, in clear recovery but still far from pre-pandemic values. 2023 promises to be the real year of recovery for the national Box Office. After the decline in 2020 due to the pandemic, the cumulative revenues of the top 50 companies in the sector start to grow again, recording in 2021 a cumulative value of 1 billion 359 million which in 2022 rises, placing itself around 1 billion and 400 million. While the process of acquisitions and aggregations of companies in the production sector continues, between 2017 and 2022 investments in the production of films primarily destined for cinemas more than doubled from 263 million to 581 million euros (+121%).
The Report shows that the total value of investments in original Italian productions (of all kinds) is 1,800 million euros and that investments on linear platforms (free and pay TV) is about 1 billion.
"The constant growth of the online component is now worth almost a third of that of television," explains Chiara Sbarigia, president of the APA, illustrating the report.
