If you want to bring the "Indian Summer" into your own garden, you should plant an amber tree. It is not only very decorative, but also heat-tolerant.

In its native North America, the American amber tree (Liquidambar styraciflua) is considered the most important tree in the forest after the oak. It is a beauty: the tree has a very upright trunk, its resin smells extremely fruity and pleasant, and it bears colorful autumn leaves like hardly any other tree - making it one of the main actors in the American "Indian Summer". However, the amber tree, which has so far been underestimated in Europe, offers even more advantages that make it very attractive for cultivation in your own garden.

In its native habitat, the amber tree grows up to 40 meters high, in a German garden it will be limited to about 15 meters, but is still very stately. If that's too big for you, you can find varieties in nurseries that only grow to a height of three to five metres.

The amber tree fulfils almost all the requirements that a "modern" tree should meet: Its long taproot makes it very weatherproof, so that it is well prepared for future storms. The hardy plant copes well with temporary flooding. But especially its resistance to heat and drought makes it very interesting for cultivation in our latitudes. It is also not susceptible to diseases and pests – but its attractiveness remains the most convincing.
