If the heater only gurgles at the beginning of the heating season and does not warm up properly, it may be worth venting. Consumers should do the right thing.

Hamm – In October, which brings many changes in 2023, the heating will be turned on again in many households. Especially with old appliances, however, some people are familiar with the well-known problems when the radiators have not been used for a long time. The heater often doesn't warm up properly, it just gurgles. There's a different way to be cosy. However, if you bleed your radiator properly, you will soon have it comfortably warm in your apartment or house again. However, mistakes should be avoided, as wa.de reports.

Properly bleed radiators at the beginning of the heating season

"Autumnal temperatures in the evenings and in the morning are waking up more and more heaters from their 'summer sleep'," explains the German Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (DVFG). If radiators do not heat up and gurgle properly, the problem can be solved by proper bleeding.

Bringing radiators out of hibernation

Poorly vented radiators are inefficient and cause higher energy costs. Air in the heating system can also cause a gurgling noise and keep radiators cold.

If heaters gurgle, they should be vented

"The reason for the gurgling is often air that collects in the heating system," says Markus Lau, technology expert at the German Liquefied Gas Association (DVFG). "Air conducts heat worse than water. As a result, poorly vented radiators work inefficiently and cause higher energy costs."

If you want to bleed your heating properly to save money and energy during the heating season, you should take four tips from the expert to heart. Markus Lau has it ready:

  • 1. The right equipment and the right vent key: "To remove air from radiators, you need a suitable vent key, which you can buy for a few euros in hardware stores," says Markus Lau. It is also important to have "a cup and a rag to catch the escaping water".
  • 2. Switch off the heating and circulation pump: "It is best to wait at least half an hour after switching it off. Then the heating water cooled down and the air bubbles collected in the radiator," says Markus Lau. When venting, you are then protected from hot splashing water. After this waiting period, turn the radiator thermostats up to full power.
  • 3. Vent in the correct order: Then use the vent key to carefully turn the vent valve open counterclockwise and have the cup ready to collect the water. First, air escapes from the vent valve with a hissing sound. "As soon as water comes out constantly after a short time, quickly close the vent valve again. Dry the valve with a cloth and check that it is tight. If the valve remains dry afterwards, it is correctly closed again," says Lau. And which radiator to start with? "Efficient bleeding ideally starts with the radiator closest to the heating system. Then bleed the nearest one," advises the DVFG technology expert.
  • 4. After ventilation, turn the heating back on: Once all radiators have been completely vented, the heating system can be switched on again. "Once the gurgling has disappeared, the heating runs optimally – energy-efficient and cost-saving," says Markus Lau. Important: "Finally, be sure to check the water pressure of the heating system again. If it is too low after venting, water should be topped up," says Markus Lau.

Bleed the heater properly – then the problems should disappear

If you bleed your heating properly in these four steps, you shouldn't have any more problems. "If the radiators do not heat up properly even after bleeding and the 'gurgling' of the heating system can still be heard, a specialist for sanitation, heating and air conditioning should be contacted," says expert Markus Lau.
