Overwintering a lemon tree: when should the plant be brought in?
As a popular exotic, the lemon tree decorates one or the other terrace or garden. However, since the potted plant is not native to Germany, the falling temperatures can harm the sapling. Usually, the lemon tree prefers a sunny spot, protected from rain and wind.
Until mid-October and early November, the lemon tree can stay outside. As soon as there is frost, he has to go in. The garage or basement would therefore not be suitable for wintering.
Two ways to overwinter the lemon tree – what hobby gardeners should pay attention to
According to the industry portal My Beautiful Garden, the tree can be stored dark and cold, as well as light and warm. However, it is important that the temperature remains constant and does not change due to solar radiation. Fluctuations can be prevented, for example, with a polystyrene or wooden plate, which is placed under the bucket. Among other things, a cold greenhouse is recommended as a location, but it should not be dark.
The plant will then be in dormant mode. In its cool winter quarters, the lemon tree needs less water, the experts from pflanzen-verstehen.de noted. It is enough to water the plant once a month. To avoid over-fertilization, less fertilization or no fertilization should also be used. With a few tips, rosemary can even survive the winter outdoors.
