The UN has estimated that one million people were displaced in Gaza in the first week of the war. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), through its communications chief Juliette Touma, said that "one million people were displaced during the first seven days of the war" between Hamas, the Islamist organization in power in Gaza, and Israel and it is "likely that the figure will increase as people continue to leave their homes." Israel has urged residents of the besieged Palestinian territory in the north - about 1.1 million people out of a total population of about 2.4 million - to flee south, saying it wants to strike at northern Gaza City to destroy the Islamist movement's center of operations.
