The fundamental strategy for resolving the conflict between Hamas and Israel "is to activate the 'two-state solution' as soon as possible, strive for a broader consensus, and promote the formation of a timetable and roadmap to restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian nation." Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, adding that Beijing condemns "all actions that harm civilians and opposes any violation of international law: it is necessary for the UN Security Council to act and for the great powers to play an active role."
"The top priority is to ceasefire and end the war, push both sides to return to the negotiating table, establish emergency humanitarian relief channels, and prevent more humanitarian disasters," Wang added.
The meeting between the two ministers was held this morning at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing: in the long note released in the afternoon by Chinese diplomacy, there is no reference to Hamas - but to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians -, while the war between Ukraine and Russia is not mentioned among the various topics discussed.
Much space, on the other hand, is dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, the New Silk Road launched in 2013 by President Xi Jinping, and to the third forum tomorrow and the day after tomorrow at which the head of the Kremlin Vladimir Putin is expected. China, Wang said, "will seize the upcoming third forum as an opportunity to form a broader international consensus and to promote the joint construction of the 'Belt and Road' towards a new phase of high-quality development." In 2024, China and Russia will celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, a useful anniversary "to deepen strategic mutual trust".
Lavrov, for his part, noted that Russia-China relations maintain positive momentum. The 'Belt and Road' has become "an important platform to promote international cooperation, with the active participation of all parties" and benefits for the whole of Eurasia.
