An expert explains a rule of thumb for the right length of grass. This is because it is easy to make mistakes when mowing, which make it difficult for the lawn to survive in winter.

It makes sense to cut the meadow in the garden even shorter before winter. But you shouldn't overdo it. This is because when the days get shorter and the amount of light is reduced, the lawn also naturally slows down its growth. If you mow it too much during this period, it is fatal, explains garden expert Elmar Mai in the ZDF program Volle Kanne. Then it lacks the necessary leafy greenery to carry out photosynthesis and the grasses are deprived of their livelihood.

According to Elmar Mai, there is a "rule of thumb" for the right length: If you press your hand into the grass, you should no longer see the handprint after five minutes – the leaves have regained sufficient erection and can withstand the snow load well in winter. This is about the same as the highest level for a lawn mower.

In addition, it is important to catch all the grass tips during regular pruning in the next few weeks. These contain plant hormones that inhibit the formation of side shoots near the ground – the grass only grows upwards, does not become dense and the lawn forms unsightly gaps.

My Area

  • Autumn leaves must be removed from the lawn as much as possible, otherwise the grass will be suffocated under the leaves and fungi can form, advises rasendoktor.de.
  • By the end of October at the latest, the lawn should be supplied with nutrients again with a potassium-rich fertilizer.
  • If you didn't make it in the spring, you can scarify the lawn again from mid-September to mid-October and supply compacted lawns with air so that the water can drain off well. To do this, for example, you punch small holes in the bottom with an appropriate handheld device.

When winter and snow arrives in the garden, you should not put unnecessary strain on the lawn: Do not store heavy objects in the meadow and avoid shoveling additional snow on it – the load robs the lawn of additional light and oxygen.
