The choice is surprising, but symbolic. It was in Bozhou, a city in eastern China, that a woman introduced herself to her husband on her wedding day in an outfit far from convention. Wearing a zip-up sports jacket, straight-cut blue jeans, black shoes and a ponytail, the bride swapped the traditional white dress for her school uniform. The same one she had worn eleven years earlier, on the day she met the man who would become her husband. "At that moment, everything seemed so familiar. I was expecting to see her in a wedding dress, but I was greeted by the girl I fell in love with eleven years ago," the lucky winner later said on the Chinese social network Douyin. He could hardly hold back his tears when he laid eyes on his wife.

In Chinese schools, uniforms are still compulsory. While students have been wearing sportswear since the 1990s, dress codes have gradually been tightened, especially in private schools. Pleated skirts, fitted trousers and white shirts are a must: enough to bring back many memories at a wedding, and mark the occasion.
The end of the traditional wedding dress?
The student uniform to replace the traditional wedding dress: if the idea makes you smile, it says a lot about the evolution of the marital wardrobe. The conventional white dress remains the main choice of brides-to-be, but does not exclude some frivolities. In 2019, on a whim, fashion designer Amélie Pichard got married in the United States. On the big day, she opted for vintage embroidered Levi's jeans, a vintage sequined top and a $5 ring.
And brands are getting more creative in this area. For its Fall/Winter 2023-2024 haute couture show, Viktor and Rolf showcased a swimsuit-style wedding dress, while Armani Privé opted for a 100% red model.
