From October, gardeners are confronted with the first frost. Conditionally hardy plants such as the olive tree should now be covered.

Even the ancient Greeks and Romans appreciated the olive tree. The plant, which originated in the Mediterranean region, not only provided the peoples with delicious fruits, but the olive branch also symbolized peace there and still adorns many coins today.

However, anyone who has an olive tree in their garden or balcony also knows that the plant in this country does not survive the winter without protection. You should take the following precautions.

To ensure that you can enjoy your olive tree for a long time, you should take the following tips to heart:

  • Use a suitable cover such as a winter fleece, brushwood or jute to protect the olive tree from frost and snow.
  • Move the olive tree against the wall of a house, as the plant is protected from the wind there.
  • As Lubera reports, the Cornicabra variety (tolerates temperatures of up to -13 degrees Celsius), the Arbequina variety (tolerates temperatures down to -11.8 degrees Celsius) as well as Hojblanca and Empeltre, both of which can withstand temperatures of up to ten degrees below zero, are considered particularly hardy.
  • According to NDR, it is also important in winter quarters that the root ball never dries out completely. Therefore, water from time to time in winter. Waterlogging should of course be avoided.

If the temperatures in winter reach less than minus ten degrees Celsius, it is advisable to move the olive tree into the warmth. The hallway, the conservatory or a greenhouse are suitable here, as the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) reports.
