Stabat Mater at the Bouffes: a bad joke

Highlights: Theatre company La Phenomena and the musical ensemble La Tempête are joining forces to redress this affront. They set about desecrating Domenico Scarlatti's Stabat Mater, composed around 1715 for the same Clement XI. Constructed in a succession of paintings (eight in all), evoking in turn the Vatican Church of the eighteenth century and a figure of the mother who no longer has anything to do with Mary on Golgotha. This modern-day Way of the Cross is the long-awaited response to this haunting work of art.


REVIEW - At the Bouffes du Nord, the work of Domenico Scarlatti is revisited with audacity and virtuosity by the ensemble La Tempête. But the result is an indigestible object of musical theatre.


Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. In 1703, after seeing Rome spared by the devastating earthquake that struck Italy, Pope Clement XI closed all the city's theatres, to give thanks to the Virgin. Devil! So there are some who really don't respect anything. Three hundred and twenty years later, the theatre company La Phenomena and the musical ensemble La Tempête, directed respectively by Maëlle Dequiedt and Simon-Pierre Bestion, are joining forces to redress this affront.

Taking up Domenico Scarlatti's Stabat Mater, composed around 1715 for the same Clement XI, they set about desecrating its subject, "in a free, pagan way", to offer an iconoclastic staged version. Constructed in a succession of paintings (eight in all), evoking in turn the Vatican Church of the eighteenth century and a figure of the mother who no longer has anything to do with Mary on Golgotha, this modern-day Way of the Cross is the long-awaited response to this haunting...
