VAT evaded in the EU in 2021 amounted to €61 billion, an improvement of around €38 billion compared to 2020. Among the member states, Italy is the country with the highest level of VAT evaded, for 14.6 billion euros, but it is also the one that has recorded an unprecedented improvement and the largest in the Union, with a reduction of 10.7%.
This is what emerges from a study by the European Commission on the 'VAT gap', the estimate of the difference between the theoretical expected revenue and the amount actually collected.
