A new challenge awaits Giovanni Soldini who tomorrow, aboard the trimaran Maserati Multi70, will set off for the 10th edition of the "Hong Kong to Vietnam Race", the longest offshore race in Asia, with a very specific goal, to conquer yet another record.
The seven-person crew that will accompany Soldini includes, among others, his son Gero, grandson Matteo and also the CEO of Exor and president of Stellantis, as well as owner, John Elkann, as well as Oliver Herrera Perez, Francesco Pedol, Gianmarco Suardi and Pierre-Laurent Boullais.
"Our goal is to set a new race record," explained the Milanese sailor, "if the weather conditions, which were very favorable in 2019, allow us to do so."
The weather is in fact the great unknown of the regatta. With less than 24 hours to go, the weather forecast that will accompany the fleet of competitors along the 673 nautical miles of Asia's longest offshore race is being defined.
Crossing the South China Sea, from Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour to the coastal city of Nha Trang in Vietnam, Soldini and the crew of the Maserati Multi70 trimaran will encounter 15/20 knots of wind at the start and in the first hours of navigation, and then enter a predominantly windy area (6/3 knots) that will slow down the race to Vietnam.
In this edition, Maserati Multi70 will have no direct rivals in the multihull class, but will sail with the 2 Transpac 52, Callisto (USA) and Centennial 3 (PHI), and the 75-foot Centennial 5 (PHI), and will take the opportunity to train in racing conditions since the forecasts do not favor the race for the speed record.
The "Hong Kong to Vietnam Race" is organized by the Royal Yacht Club of Hong Kong under the auspices of the RORC.
