After a particularly stressful year at work or personal changes – sometimes you need a longer break than the regular one to two weeks of vacation.

Probably most employees want a secure job with a fixed income and good opportunities for advancement. Some people also aspire to a presentable career and a certain social status. Many are of the opinion that they should not really take time off. To spend all one's time and energy fully on work and to neglect other areas of life accordingly is probably the sacrifice that has to be made.

Modern job market: Career breaks are not a career killer

"Time off may entail professional risks. Still, it's important to recognize when it's appropriate," advises marketing strategist Dorie Clark in Harvard Business Manager.

Whether in the form of a sabbatical or an unpaid vacation – in order to avoid burnout or a depressive mood, it can be worthwhile to take a break from work every now and then. (Symbolic image) © Image Source/Imago

If the annual leave has already been used up or is simply not sufficient, the employer can also apply for professional leave, such as unpaid leave, further training or a sabbatical. Those who can afford it often have the option of reducing to a four-day week or a part-time job. After all, working fewer hours a week in today's working world no longer means not being able to succeed on the job. For many young employees in particular, a healthy work-life balance is essential, and employers are only too aware of this.

Career break – when it's time for a longer break

In many professions, employees regularly reach their limits and resilience. If you don't pay enough attention to your own needs and your physical and mental health, you can even work yourself into so-called burnout in extreme cases. In order to prevent this from happening in the first place, regular time-outs are recommended in order to be able to switch off regularly and clear your head.

According to Focus.de, time for family, travel and self-realization are also understandable reasons for taking a career break. Even after strokes of fate and emotionally stressful events, it can be important to take a break from work. If long weekends in the mountains or a spontaneous getaway by the sea are no longer enough, it may be time for a longer break.
