In 2022, 431,195 return decisions were made across the European Union but only 73,580 were made, or a success rate of 17%. The figure for Italy is falling. In fact, compared to 28,185 ordered returns, only 2,790 were actually completed, which equates to a success rate of 10% (it was 9% in 2021, 12% in 2020 and 24% in 2019).
In terms of entries into the system, across the EU in 2022 there were 884,985 requests for first-instance international protection (which is different from arrivals in general, ed.). In Italy, there were 77,200, up on 2021.
