Spaghetti is in first place among the most popular shapes among Italians. This was revealed by an elaboration by Unione Italiana Food on the basis of a Nielsen survey that photographed the preferences in terms of pasta shapes in the country, according to 4 areas: North-West (Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta, Liguria, Lombardy), North-East (Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna), Centre (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio, Sardinia), South (Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily).

"If Spaghetti - informs a message - are the ID of pasta, in second place are Penne and together they represent 78% of pasta sold throughout the country, taking into account that when we talk about spaghetti and penne we refer to the entire category of spaghettini, spaghettoni, pennette, mezze penne, pennoni and all the related terms that refer to the same shape.

Starting from the third position, regional preferences begin to take shape, with iconic pasta shapes used for traditional recipes. In the North (west and east) fusilli are the winners, while in the center it is short pasta such as mezze maniche that is the master and in the south the preference goes to pasta for broths and soups, with mixed pasta occupying most of the section. In fourth place, in the North (West and East) and in the South, short pasta wins against fusilli that conquer the Center and finally, in fifth position, pasta for broths and soups predominates in the North while in the Center and South rigatoni/tortiglioni/macaroni win. Unione Italiana Food reminds that Italy is the world leader in production (3.6 million tons) and consumption (23 kg per person) and with the participating pasta makers it offers, as Christmas approaches, a small guide to the right format/condiment combinations, reserving a place of honor for first courses rich in taste and tradition.
