Just bite into the persimmons? Many people don't dare to do this because they are unsure whether the shell is edible. We have the answer.

Sweet, fruity and exotic – persimmons have become an indispensable part of the shopping cart in winter. With a little practice, you can even grow them yourself in a container or as a tree in the garden. However, many are unsure about the preparation of the fruit, which originally comes from China. Can you eat the peel? And what about the core case?

Persimmon is the collective term for the exotic fruits. Cultivated forms such as persimmon and Sharon are special varieties of persimmons, as Plantura points out. What all varieties have in common is that they are very healthy, but also very rich in carbohydrates. This means that the fruit provides quick energy and also provides the body with vitamins A and C as well as fiber. But what should you keep in mind when consuming it?

  • You can confidently eat the peel with persimmons. However, wash the fruit extensively before eating it to remove dirt.
  • You can also eat the core inside the fruit, because it is usually not very pronounced anyway.
  • The stalk should be removed, as well as any leaf remains.
  • Particularly ripe fruits can also be spooned like a kiwi.

However, since the skin of persimmons is often perceived as firm, you can of course still peel the fruit. It also ensures that you consume fewer pesticides.

If you buy persimmons at the supermarket, make sure that the fruit is not too soft yet. By the way, black dots in the flesh are not a sign of rot, but mean that there is a particularly high amount of fructose, i.e. the fruit is very ripe.
