To ensure that you start the New Year safely, you should take some precautions in the garden. This is because many objects can easily burn when they come into contact with fireworks.

The louder, more colorful and higher, the better: Many still celebrate New Year's Eve with tons of fireworks, firecrackers and sparklers, even if that's neither good for the wallet nor for the wildlife. To make sure you don't start the new year with a nasty surprise, you should follow these safety tips for your garden.

If you want to celebrate New Year's Eve in a cozy atmosphere in the garden, you should be careful when you set off fireworks in your own garden. Because precisely because the mood is usually exuberant and people are drunk, accidents happen again and again at the end of the year that could easily have been avoided.

Things that can easily catch fire:

  • Plants, including their covers: If it is dry on New Year's Eve, fleece, brushwood or other material that actually serves as protection against snow and ice catches fire particularly easily. Also, keep enough distance (see below).
  • Animal dwellings such as the rabbit hutch, especially if dry hay is stored there, are at risk. It's better to bring them to safety.

  • Garden furniture made of dry, rotten wood. It's better to pack this furniture away and use plastic chairs and tables that are also weatherproof.
  • Tablecloths: Do not leave hot sparklers on the table. Because even if the material does not catch fire, it can cause severe stains or damage.

Half-timbered houses are particularly at risk, as not only the exterior façade is made of wood.

How much distance should you keep?

As GartenHaus Magazine reports, according to Section 6 of the 1st Explosives Act, a minimum distance must be maintained from each firework for safety.

For category one explosive devices, the safety distance must be at least one meter. These include sparklers and table fireworks.
For category two explosive devices (fountains, rockets, Chinese firecrackers), a safety distance of at least eight meters must be maintained.
The distance for category three explosive devices must be at least 15 meters. These include rockets with limited climbing height.

In the immediate vicinity of churches, half-timbered houses, houses with thatched roofs, hospitals and children's and old people's homes, no explosives may be detonated.

A nice alternative to fireworks is a warming fire. Use a fire bowl for this, because it is not only easy to handle, but also gives a nice, cozy atmosphere. If that's too dicey for you, you can fall back on atmospheric LED lighting.
