An intense storm of rain, wind and hail was recorded between Sunday night and early this morning in the capital of Cordoba and towns in the interior of the province, with no casualties reported, although there were evacuations and interruptions in electricity and drinking water services in the midst of the New Year celebrations.

The magnitude of the storm and the 60 millimeters of rain that fell in just three hours caused several disruptions in the provincial capital. Among them, the collapse of more than 30 meters of an avenue, which "disappeared" in the middle of the storm.

The unusual situation occurred on Vélez Sarsfield Avenue in the vicinity of the intersection with Ángelo de Peredo Street, in a section of the avenue adjacent to the well of a construction site where a housing complex is being built.

The sinkhole completely wiped out the asphalt in the right lane of the avenue. Early Monday morning, personnel from the Municipality, the construction company and Aguas Cordobesas were working at the site assessing the damage.

For the time being, the area had been cordoned off and there was a total traffic cut. There were no casualties in the incident.

After the storm, the municipality of the capital of Cordoba launched an operation to recover the electricity service in several neighborhoods, due to the fall of poles that also affects the operation of traffic lights, while due to the flooding of the Suquía River there were flooded homes and several vehicles were stranded due to the flooding in the streets.

The situation was similar in the towns of La Calera and Villa Allende, in the small mountains of Gran Córdoba.
