The year 2023 is coming to an end and the firecracker sale is starting. But an Edeka store refrains from displaying New Year's Eve firecrackers on its shelves and asks customers for their understanding.

Bremen – Firecrackers, rockets and firecrackers are now being sold everywhere in this country. For many people, the turn of the year is unthinkable without it. The evil spirits must be driven away, according to custom. Firecrackers, flares, fountains and firecrackers are now available for purchase in supermarkets and discounters. Numerous online shops also offer fireworks. At Lidl, customers could even reserve them online in advance so that they could hold them in their hands. The only thing that still needs to be picked up is the firecrackers.

An Edeka branch near Bremen, on the other hand, is apparently taking a completely different approach. In the product flyer of the 52nd week (27 to 30 December 2023), the supermarket asks its customers for their understanding. Because "out of attachment to our region and the love of nature, we are also refraining from selling firecrackers and rockets on New Year's Eve this year," according to the supermarket's explanation of its decision. Particulate matter, garbage and noise polluted people, animals and nature. An X user from (formerly Twitter) posts the page and reaps a lot of comments.

It quickly becomes clear that "he didn't sell any fireworks last New Year's Eve," reports one user. "Lidl has!" was another user's tip. Another hasn't been buying from Edeka for a long time. Even a bag of chips for 99 cents, a discounted Tennessee whiskey (14.99 euros) and two cans of energy drinks for a measly 77 cents can't seem to change the user's mind.

Edeka branch addresses customers before New Year's Eve – encouragement for the campaign

But there is also encouragement for the campaign. "Very exemplary", "why don't more people come up with this idea?", "fat respect" and "that's so great", comment the advocates, who also care about animals and small children. And already a user appeals for understanding: "Leave the peaceful pyro fans, like me, the one day".

Here's what you should pay attention to when setting off firecrackers:

  • At home, the fireworks should be stored in a cool and dry place that is out of reach of children
  • Never put firecrackers in your pocket
  • Before setting off the firecracker, plan in which direction you want it to fly and where you will go
  • Never shoot rockets from your hand
  • Never aim in the direction of other children or adults.
  • Never use homemade firecrackers and rockets.

The sales taboo does not apply to all Edeka branches; it is the decision of the respective franchise entrepreneur. If the Edeka chain has its way, it's okay to have a blast on New Year's Eve. The company advertises numerous fireworks on its own website with little restraint. Some may see this as a contradiction to the otherwise rather climate-conscious image of the grocer.

This two-pronged approach to action may not be to everyone's liking. But only individual tenants of the supermarket chain have consistently decided not to sell any more cracker offers to their customers. Hypocritical? Because "alcohol is ok," a user asks towards the end of the posting. And what about meat and dairy products from factory farming? "They are also super bad for the environment and the animals – all year round and not just on one day."

For many New Year's Eve fans, the boycott of firecrackers is where the fun stops. And Baltic Sea holidaymakers and locals are also likely to be anything but happy about the news, because they will even have to temporarily do without a shopping opportunity altogether. (sthe
