Lambskin stays beautiful for a long time with little maintenance. However, the natural product should rarely end up in the washing machine – and only with the right detergent.

Real lambskin does not necessarily need to be washed, because the natural product cleans itself. Due to the wool wax lanolin it contains, it is also dirt and water repellent. To make it smell fresh again, it is enough to air out the coat occasionally in the fresh air. However, if stains do get on the lambskin, fur can often be washed in the washing machine. There are a few things to consider.

Remove stains on the lambskin by hand

To ensure that the lambskin remains beautiful for as long as possible, it should ideally be cleaned by hand. In the case of dried stains, it is usually sufficient to brush out the dirt with a lambskin brush or a curry brush. Otherwise, moisten a cloth with lukewarm water and wipe over the contamination with it. For grease stains as well as larger stains, you should dip the cloth in a light wool detergent solution and work the area with it. The leather should remain dry.

How do I wash lambskin in the washing machine?

If cleaning by hand is not enough, lambskin can also be washed in the washing machine in many cases. According to the sustainability portal Utopia.de, a wash cycle should usually not be a problem with medicated and vegetable-tanned skins. However, always follow the manufacturer's care instructions. However, since the quality suffers from every wash, the washing machine should be used as rarely as possible. Here's how to do it:

  • Ideally, use a special care detergent for lambskins that contain lanolin. The natural wool wax is thus replaced during washing. A mild, pH-neutral wool detergent is also suitable for sheepskins.
  • Wash the lambskin on the wool wash program at 30 °C.
  • Choose a gentle spin cycle at 400 to 600 rpm so that the coat does not become matted.
  • Then dry the fur lying on a drying rack – never in the tumble dryer, on the heater or in direct sunlight. The leather would become dry and brittle due to heat.
  • When drying, pull the leather into shape from time to time to keep it supple.

How do I get sheepskin fluffy again?

Once the coat is completely dry after washing, brush it vigorously with a sheepskin brush. In this way, matted areas are loosened and the coat becomes nice and fluffy again. To keep it soft and beautiful, you should regularly brush the coat, shake it up and air it out outdoors. Even with many garments, airing instead of washing is completely sufficient.
