"Nearly 10,000 deaths due to Covid-19 were reported to WHO in December and there was a 42% increase in hospital admissions and a 62% increase in intensive care unit admissions compared to November." This was stated at a press conference by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"Although Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the virus continues to circulate, mutate and kill. Data from various sources indicate an increase in transmission in December, fuelled by crowds during the festive period and the JN.1 variant, which is now the most frequently reported variant globally," he added.
"We must all continue to take precautions against Covid-19. Although 10,000 deaths per month is far below the peak of the pandemic, this level of preventable deaths is not acceptable," he concluded, calling on countries "to maintain surveillance and sequencing and ensure access to tests, treatments and vaccines."
