A crispy baked pizza base, topped with tomato sauce, Italian herbs and mozzarella, that's all many people need. And pineapple least of all.

Many people like it classic when it comes to what can be put on the pizza. Margarita, salami, diavola, speciale, vegetariana and pizza quattro formaggi (four-cheese pizza) are probably among the favorites of the Germans. But when it comes to artichokes, olives and sardines, most people get picky. Pineapple on pizza is probably ordered by very few people in restaurants and is considered an unwritten, but absolute mortal sin in Italy.

Not an Italian creation – Pizza Hawaii originally comes from Canada

While the Hawaiian toast is said to come from Germany, according to Spiegel, the pizza of the same name was probably first prepared in Canada in 1962. The Greek-born and apparent creator of Hawaiian pizza Sam Panopoulos died at the age of 83 after causing a stir internationally with his culinary creation, reports Der Spiegel.

Pizza "Hawaii"? Never, but Gino's Neapolitan pineapple pizza

However, the pineapple pizza from the renowned pizza chef Gino Sorbillo from Naples is by no means an ordinary Hawaiian pizza with tomato sauce, ham, pineapple and cheese. Instead, Sorbillo tops a pizza bianca (i.e. without tomato sauce), with three types of cheese and pineapple, which has been cooked twice to caramelize during baking.

He created it to "fight prejudice against food," explains Gino Sorbillo in an interview with CNN. "Unfortunately, people follow the crowd and go by other people's views or what they hear," he laments. Sorbillo's creation is now available under the name "Margherita con Ananas" (translated: Margherita with pineapple) in Via dei Tribunali, a street in the old historic center of Naples, the world capital of pizza, for about seven euros.
