Book of the Week: "The Guilt You Carry" by Michael Hjorth and Hans Rosenfeldt

Highlights: Book of the Week: "The Guilt You Carry" by Michael Hjorth and Hans Rosenfeldt. The eighth volume about Sebastian Bergman is also exciting. If you haven't read a volume from the series yet, you should start now at the latest. The well-constructed storylines of the writers are quite complex, so a lateral entry into the series from volume to volume is a bit difficult. However, the elements of suspense and the skilful writing style of the two authors make for awake reading moments anyway.

Michael Hjorth, Hans Rosenfeldt "The Guilt You Carry": That's what the book is about

Actually, there should be no more cooperation between the Reich Murder Commission and the psychologist Sebastian Bergman. But when a woman's body is found in a pig farm with the words "Solve the case, Sebastian Bergman" written on the wall, Sebastian's daughter Vanja has to call him in again. The collaboration and the problems between father and daughter had already caused many difficult moments in the previous volumes.

After a colleague at the Reich Murder Commission was unmasked as a murderer, the special unit headed by Sebastian's daughter Vanja Lithner is to be disbanded. That's when she gets a phone call: a woman has been found murdered outside Västerås, in a pig farm. On the wall of the stable, someone has written in blood-red letters: "Solve the case, Sebastian Bergman!".

Blurb/Rowohlt

Sebastian Bergman is a good psychologist and has also made a name for himself as a supporter in the investigation. But teamwork is not his thing. He prefers to be alone and closeness to other people, even a relationship, constricts him. He lost his wife and child in the tsunami disaster of 2004. Driven by loss in a similar way to the Dortmund Tatort inspector Peter Faber, Sebastian Bergman's happiness seems to have given way. He seeks solace in his work and tries not to slip away.

A little time has passed since the last volume of the series. For example, the first chapters of the eighth Sebastian Bergman crime novel are used to resolve the cliffhangers and open questions of the previous volume, but this is not a bad introduction. However, it is not suitable for reading just before falling asleep, as the reader should stay on top of the plot so as not to lose track. However, the elements of suspense and the skilful writing style of the two authors make for awake reading moments anyway.

Michael Hjorth, Hans Rosenfeldt "The Guilt You Carry": Conclusion

The Sebastian Bergman crime novels are addictive. Crime fans will get their money's worth here. However, for a better understanding of the contents, at least the previous volume should be read. The well-constructed storylines of the writers are quite complex, so that a lateral entry into the series from volume to volume is a bit more difficult. However, the connoisseur of Nordic noir crime thrillers will appreciate this: continuous suspense and the depth and complexity of the characters and plot make it the very best entertainment.
