Italy strongly condemns the repeated attacks by the Houthis against merchant ships in the Red Sea and confirms its strong support for the right to free and safe navigation, in line with international standards. In the face of the unacceptable behaviour of the Houthis, Italy supports the operations of allied countries, which have the right to defend their vessels, in the interest of global trade flows and humanitarian assistance". This is stated in a note released by Palazzo Chigi." Italy welcomes the approval of UN Security Council Resolution 2722 (2024) of 10 January 2024 and fully supports the efforts of UN member states to ensure free and safe navigation in the waters of the Red Sea."
"The repeated violations of the arms embargo established by Resolution 2216 (2016) are to be condemned and we appeal to all UN member countries to respect the restrictions imposed. It is essential to ensure the security of the Red Sea by preventing and countering destabilising actions that are not in the interests of either local actors or the international community. It is essential to avoid a further escalation of the level of tension in the region."
