The average salary of Germans is just under 49,000 euros per year, but doctors are well above that. You can read here in which disciplines the best earnings are made.
On average, Germans earn almost 49,000 euros gross per year. This is what Focus writes with reference to the Kununu salary check. The annual salary of most doctors is clearly higher at an average of 73,200 euros per year (gross). According to Focus, as a physician you can expect a starting salary of around 29,000 euros (per year, gross), as an experienced top physician with up to 146,500 euros.
But even within the medical cosmos, there are specialties in which more is earned than elsewhere. Using data from the Federal Statistical Office (as of 2019), the site Praktischarzt.de compared the income of a wide range of medical fields and identified the top five earners.
In these specialties, doctors earn the most

What exactly do the specialists do?
- Radiology: Radiologists basically take all kinds of images of the body, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or computed tomography (CT).
- Ophthalmology: Ophthalmologists take care of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases related to the eye.
- Dermatology: Dermatologists specialize in the largest organ in the human body and take care of cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin diseases, among other things. In addition, they often also offer aesthetic treatments, e.g. Botox injections.
- Orthopaedics: Colloquially, orthopaedic surgeons are also often called bone breakers. They take care of the human musculoskeletal system. Among other things, they set up fractures or insert joint replacements.
- Urology: Urologists are the experts in everything related to the urinary tract. They treat problems such as kidney stones and urinary tract infections, but also prostate diseases and infertility.

According to the list on Praktischarzt.de, the following specialties are also among the top ten, which also record high annual sales in the practices: surgery (practice income: €756,000, turnover: €325,000), internal medicine (practice income: €721,000, turnover: €321,000), general medicine (practice income: €466,000, turnover: €252,000), gynecology (practice income: €482,000, turnover: €251,000), ear, nose and throat medicine (practice income: €477,000, turnover: €243. 000 €).
