World Pizza Day is back on January 17th, an annual event dedicated to one of the most popular food proposals in the world and pride of Made in Italy. The anniversary will allow all pizza lovers and not only to taste various pizza proposals, from the gourmet version to the more traditional and classic one. From an economic point of view, Coldiretti data speak of a sector with a turnover that rises to over 15 billion euros per year.
On the other hand, the estimated employment is calculated at 100,000 full-time employees and the same number on weekends. It is recorded by the agricultural organization that the Italian sector churns out 2.7 billion pizzas a year with 200 million kilos of flour all year round, 225 million kilos of mozzarella, 30 million kilos of olive oil and 260 million kilos of tomato sauce. In terms of consumption, Pizza Margherita, according to Coldiretti analysis, remains the most consumed, while, on a planetary level, Americans are the largest consumers with 13 kilos per person. In Europe, Italians are in the lead with 7.8 kilos per year, followed by the Spanish (4.3), French and Germans (4.2), British (4), Belgians (3.8), Portuguese (3.6) and Austrians who, with 3.3 kilos of pizza per capita per year, close the ranking.
In 2023, the trend in pizza orders, based on the processing of Just Est food delivery, reached almost 5.5 million kilos for a total of over 5,800 kilometers, "a distance that is equivalent to getting from Rome to the North Pole." The most ordered pizzas nationwide were pizza margherita, diavola and capricciosa.
