Beijing goes on the counterattack and protests with the US and Japan for the quick congratulations sent on Saturday to William Lai, winner of the presidential elections in Taiwan. The island considered rebellious "is still part of the 'One China'" despite the vote that rewarded the candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), on autonomist positions. Foreign Minister Wang Yi, speaking from Cairo where he is visiting, made it clear that the vote cannot change the basic facts: Taiwan "has never been a country. It has not been in the past and certainly will not be in the future," according to a statement released by Beijing's diplomacy.
Independence, in other words, "is a dead end. China will eventually complete reunification, and Taiwan will return to the embrace of the motherland. We believe that the international community will continue to support the just cause of the Chinese people who oppose separatist activities and struggle for national reunification based on the One China principle," Wang concluded, again citing the principle that there is only one China in the world of which Taiwan is an "inalienable" part.

The day after the election saw the Dragon committed to minimizing the Lai factor and protesting for the congratulations sent with extreme speed by several countries to the president-elect, targeting above all the heads of diplomacy of the United States and Japan, to recall the indissoluble ties between Taipei and the People's Republic.
