Cashless is in vogue. But you can't do without cash everywhere in Germany, to the annoyance of many. Even at a post office, card payment does not seem to have arrived yet.

Munich – "Only cash is true", everyone knows this saying. Nevertheless, card payments are becoming more and more important, and cash is increasingly receding into the background. Many even wonder if cash could soon disappear altogether. One of the big factors in the upswing in card payments was the Corona pandemic, in which contactless payment became a habit for many. However, it is not always possible to pay by card, which causes annoyance for many people.

No card payment at the post office? "Generally not now, or how?"

One of these stores, where card payment does not seem to be possible, has now also been found by a Reddit user. He posts a photo of a notice in a tobacco shop. It reads: "Attention, card payment is not possible at the post office!" The creator of the post asks himself above the picture: "Not in general now or how?"

In this way, the user also ensures discussions in the comments. One of them says: "Once again great proof that digitalization is progressing superbly in Germany." Another suspects a different background: "It's just not possible for postal services. It's probably that the device is defective." In addition, similar experiences are also shared: "In our tobacconist's shop, card payments are also refused. But also only for postal services," writes one Reddit user.

Card payment at Deutsche Post:

But how is card payment actually regulated at Deutsche Post? Is card payment a must for Deutsche Post branches? As the company did at the request of IPPEN. MEDIA reveals, can be paid for in the partner branches of Deutsche Post with Girocard, Maestro and VPay. "In around 9,000 partner branches, payment with credit and debit cards (Mastercard and Visa) has also been possible for several months," explains the Deutsche Post spokeswoman. Accordingly, even very small amounts, such as individual stamps, could be paid cashless. Card payment is therefore usually common practice at all post offices and not, as the creator of the Reddit post suspects, generally not possible.

Card payment is in vogue, as the numbers show. For example, the number of transactions with the Girocard increased by 2021.2022 percent from 13 to 4, to a total of 6.7 billion, according to ratgeber-kartenzahlung.de. In addition, fewer and fewer people are inserting their cards into the card reader during the payment process. In 2022, 79 percent of all transactions were contactless. In 2019, this was the case for only 35.7 percent.
