Germany as safe as Botswana: The world risk map for tourists in 2024

2024-01-15T10:49:52.641Z

Highlights: Germany as safe as Botswana: The world risk map for tourists in 2024. Unlike last year, Germany is no longer classified under the "dark green" category. Germany no longer belongs to the "high-risk" category, which is reserved for the safest destinations in the world. Germany is only a low-risk country for "green" holidays, which can be visited with few restrictions, although country-specific risks must be taken. The German company A3M, based in Hamburg and Tübingen, has also created a so-called risk map.

If you are planning your holiday for the new year, you should inform yourself carefully about security risks. A company awards five categories.

Bremen – Ukraine, Iran, Israel and almost all of North Africa: All these destinations carry a "very high risk" in the new year 2024. The German company A3M, based in Hamburg and Tübingen, has also created a so-called risk map for the new year, which analyses the risk potential in all countries of the world. If you are planning your trips for the new year, you should definitely check whether your destination is at high risk.

Holidays 2024: These are the safest travel destinations for tourists

In order to be able to compare the countries, the company has taken such as entry and exit, transport in the country (air transport, public transport, taxis, cars and other means of transport) as a criterion. In addition, infrastructure, health, risk of infection, natural hazards and environment, safety were examined, among other things.

Accordingly, countries marked in dark red, such as those mentioned above, should only be visited with extreme caution. Due to the war in Ukraine and the war in Israel, it is understandable that experts advise against travel to these countries. But even in large regions outside the war zones, the highest warning level applies. These include the African countries of Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Holiday 2024: Dark red alert level also for Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti

In the Middle to Far East, A3M also warns of some countries with the highest intensity. In addition to Israel, these include Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Travel to Myanmar is also strongly discouraged. In addition, in Latin America, crisis-ridden Venezuela is glowing dark red, as are parts of Colombia and Haiti. For all these countries, it is true that they can "only be visited with significant restrictions or not at all". "Comprehensive precautions" must be taken before the trip, such as a security concept.

Travel to countries marked in orange is also "associated with high risks". Examples of such countries include the aggressor countries of Russia and Belarus, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, many African and Central American countries, and parts of Indonesia and Mexico. In some of these countries, the situation is also extremely tense and special security measures are necessary.

Holiday risks 2024: "Level yellow" for China, India and Thailand

The first level of countries that can be visited without extensive preparations is the yellow level. Nevertheless, there is also an "increased risk" here, because violent crime, health risks or prolonged violent protests can also occur here.

Germany is no longer one of the safest countries to travel to: Same level of security as Botswana

There is only a low risk for "green" areas, which can be visited with few restrictions, although country-specific risks must be taken into account.

Almost all of Europe can be assigned to this level, as well as the USA, Cuba, Argentina, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, some Gulf States, Malaysia, Brunei and the African countries of Namibia, Botswana and Morocco. Interestingly, Germany also belongs to this category, unlike last year 2023. At that time, the Federal Republic of Germany was still classified under the "dark green", the safest category.

High-risk countries: Have your vote.

Safest travel destinations in the world in 2024: Canada, Norway, Switzerland and Co.

This year, too, this is reserved for the safest travel destinations, to which Germany apparently no longer belongs. Unlike Switzerland, Luxembourg, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark (including Greenland), the Faroe Islands and Canada. According to the assessment, only these eight countries can be visited "without restrictions", and there is "very little risk" here. For example, strikes here rarely affect elementary services, violent protests are rare and/or localized. Slovakia, like Germany, was also classified dark green last year.

A variety of factors therefore play a role in the classifications by risk of countries and regions. Countries and regions where travellers should definitely inform themselves about country-specific risks in advance of a trip are marked by the signal colours orange and red. In principle, however, relevant information is also stored in countries with lower risks for travellers.

As a general rule, before going on holiday, you should thoroughly inform yourself about the security risk in the respective country and take appropriate precautions. The Federal Foreign Office also provides detailed information on risks in all countries. You can read about the rights and obligations of employees when it comes to holiday planning here. (cgsc)
