Not only can poor quality underwear make you feel uncomfortable – it can also lead to vaginal infections. Experts say there are a few things to consider when choosing underwear. "In general, underwear that fits well, is temperature-regulating and made from natural materials is ideal," Dr. Sumi Javid, founder and director of HerMD, told The Post. She explained that natural underwear that wicks sweat, breathes and regulates temperature will provide comfort and maintain vaginal health.
"It really has to do with the breathability of the fabric," Dr. Andrea Brayden, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Atlanta, who consulted with a handful of experts on the subject, told HuffPost.
Air is better exchanged through natural fabrics such as cotton hemp or bamboo and linen underwear, compared to synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon and satin. "For women, it's important for vaginal health to have good airflow," Brayden explained. However, the benefits of cotton (or any fabric) can vary - depending on the quality of the fibers, the type of weaving and the circumstances of life. "During periods of excessive sweating, cotton can retain too much moisture, leading to overgrowth of bacteria and fungi," said Dr. Scott D. Miller, medical director at Wellstar Urology in Atlanta. In these situations, it offers a combination of cotton and synthetic fibers.

Pure polyester "is probably the worst fabric for underwear," Miller warns. "Although it is among the lightest materials, it is neither absorbent nor particularly breathable," he said, "however, its durability makes it a good addition as a small part of fabric blends."
Finding the right fit for you, on the other hand, is a little more personal. "The key is a comfortable fit that doesn't shrink or erode the fabric," Dr. Susie Lipinski, of Pediatrix Medical Group, explained to HuffPost. ... Ask yourself, do your underwear feel comfortable and move with you or tighten and shrink? Do the underwear cause rubbing? Even two pairs of underwear in the same fit but from different brands can fit you differently."

Give up the thong, sleep without underwear
Experts recommend giving up the thong/ShutterStock
If you are prone to infections in the intimate areas, keep the thong only for special occasions. "In general, thongs are really bad for vaginal health because the way it sits on the body is a little unhygienic," Dr. Usha Rajagopal, plastic surgeon and founder of The V Suite, told The Post. She explained that women's thongs can be tight and restrictive and pull bacteria from the anus area toward the vaginal opening, which can lead to a serious infection.
When it comes time to sleep, less is more, many experts agreed. "In general, I recommend sleeping without underwear," said Dr. Fenva Millhouse, a board-certified urologist at Down There Urology in Chicago.
