With a cough or sore throat in bed? No problem, because these four top recipes from grandma will get you back in shape in no time.

Kassel – Home remedies are a tried and tested help against any kind of cold. They are often not only extremely effective, but also practical, as they can normally be found in every household, as the name suggests. For coughs and sore throats, Grandma has four top recipes ready in January, which, according to kraeuterhaus.de, can work wonders, especially during the cold season.

Grandma's four top recipes in January: What home remedies help against coughs and sore throats?

When it comes to coughs caused by colds, many people rely on quark compresses – also called curd compresses in Austria and Bavaria. Although there is still a lack of scientific studies that prove that this home remedy actually helps against coughs, some swear by it. The fact is that the lactic acid bacteria in quark can reduce inflammation and have an expectorant effect.

This is how it's done: The curd or low-fat quark is heated to body temperature. Then it is spread about one centimeter thick on the middle of a linen or tea towel. The two empty ends are then folded or wrapped on top of each other. Then the curd wrap is placed on the chest for at least half an hour.

Grandma's home remedies? This is how the term came about

In fact, the recipes for home remedies for colds do not come from "grandma". The term simply refers to traditional healing and care methods that have been passed down from generation to generation. The grandmothers serve as a symbol for the older generation who have shared their experiences with their descendants.

An alternative for a persistent cough is the lemon compress. This is also said to relieve bronchitis, pneumonia and sore throats, as the lemon can help reduce swelling of inflamed tissue. The difference to the curd wrap is that the lemon wrap can be placed on the chest or around the neck both warm and cold.

This is how it's done: Wash an unsprayed lemon, cut it and place it in the middle of a linen or tea towel. As with the curd wrap, the ends are folded over each other and the lemons are lightly crushed. In any case, some lemon juice should come out. The wrap is then placed on the affected area for half an hour.

Onions are not only a constant companion in cooking, but can also help with coughs. The reason for this is that onion juice has an antibacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and germicidal effect. In addition, the natural cough syrup contains vitamin C, trace elements and important minerals. You can choose to prepare it with honey or sugar.

Here's how to do it: Cut the onion into small cubes and pour into a container. After that, either two tablespoons of honey or 150 grams of cane sugar are added. The whole thing should steep for at least five hours – preferably overnight. Finally, the onion should be squeezed. The collected juice can be taken with a teaspoon every hour.

Keeping warm as a home remedy for coughs and sore throats

Last but not least, here's more of a tip than a recipe from grandma: If you lie flat with a cold, you should always make sure that your feet are always warm. Cold feet can cause the temperature of the mucous membranes of the throat and throat to drop by up to two degrees. To counteract this, warm tea helps. Suitable for coughs and sore throats is especially thyme tea. (cln)
