Oppenheimer cements its position as the favorite in the awards season that will culminate with the night of the Oscars. Universal's blockbuster about the father of the atomic bomb won eight Critics Choice awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. The 29th edition of the awards presented by the world's largest association of film and TV critics, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, was a further indicator of which titles and names are resonating with Hollywood this year.
The other summer box-office phenomenon, Barbie, received six awards, including Best Comedy of the Year.
Emma Stone Best Actress for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Creatures! by Yorgos Lanthimos. Paul Giamatti, a gruff but very human professor in The Holdovers by Alexander Payne, won the award for Best Actor, repeating his victory at the Globes.
Oppenheimer's haul includes other hefty awards, such as Best Cast, Best Cinematography, Visual Effects, Editing, and Score. Robert Downey Jr followed up on the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.
As far as the small screen is concerned, the awards have followed those of the Globes, exactly 24 hours before the Emmys, which are celebrated tonight (live on Sky and Now from 1 am in Italy). Succession, The Bear, and Beef: The Clash won Best Drama, Comedy, and Limited Series respectively. Succession's Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook were voted Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series; JeremyAllen White and Ayo Edebiri of The Bear in a comedy and Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won for Beef Beef. Nothing to do for the Italian series The Good Mothers, which lost to Lupin.
