Taiwan's president, TsaiIng-wen, remarked on the island's "close and faithful" partnership with the U.S., welcoming the unofficial U.S. delegation on a post-election visit at the initiative of President Joe Biden's administration, in order to meet with high-level politicians, including Tsai's deputy, William Lai, who won Saturday's election.
"Your visit is very significant and fully demonstrates U.S. support for Taiwan's democracy and highlights the close and faithful partnership between Taiwan and the United States," Tsai said, according to local media. The informal U.S. delegation arrived in Taiwan yesterday and began the round of meetings starting with the outgoing president. Composed of former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, former Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and the president of the American Institute in Taiwan (the de facto US embassy) Laura Rosenberger, the delegation is scheduled to meet with "leading political figures" before leaving tomorrow.
