The families of the victims of the Viareggio massacre are carrying out a sit-in in front of the Court of Cassation on the day when the sentence on the case that dates back to June 2009 and which caused the death of 32 people and hundreds of injured is expected. A series of photos of the banners are on display in Piazza Cavour.
Last December, the judges of the Supreme Court asked to confirm all the convictions issued in the second appeal process. Prosecutor Pietro Molino and the Advocate General of the Court of Cassation, Pasquale Fimiani, asked to dismiss, at the end of the indictment, all 18 appeals filed against the sentence of the Court of Appeal of Florence issued in 2022.
Also involved in the proceedings is Mauro Moretti, former CEO of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and former CEO of FS, who had been sentenced on appeal to 5 years in prison for railway disaster, fire and injuries while the charge of manslaughter had fallen under the statute of limitations.

Moretti's defence: 'There is no evidence of his responsibility'

"There is no evidence of Moretti's responsibility either as CEO of RFI or as CEO of FS." This is what is stated by the lawyer Ambra Giovene, defender of the former CEO of RFI and FS, Mauro Moretti, defendant in the trial for the Viareggio massacre under examination today by the Supreme Court. "In reference to the role of CEO of RFI, there is evidence to the contrary: he had signed a prescription to track foreign railway wagons circulating in Italy," adds the criminal lawyer. This prescription was forgotten in the trial, even though it was signed by Moretti. She entered the proceedings only to deny their relevance. As for the role of CEO of FS, he is accused of having imposed not to track the wagons as required by an EU regulation of the time that imposed the free circulation of wagons of the Riv brand. What Moretti is accused of, therefore, is having imposed what was already provided for by law."
