Highlights: Goldfish plant (Nematanthus) is also known as the kissable mouth and is native to South America. Bright orange, eye-catching flowers that appear from spring to fall are the focus of beauty. The plant gets its name because its fish-shaped flowers resemble a goldfish or an open mouth. Are you still looking for an extraordinary plant that attracts everyone's attention? Then you should reach for the exotic and easy-care goldfish plant.

There are plants that, with their curious appearance, are more reminiscent of animals than plants. This includes not only special orchid varieties or the exotic Strelitzia, but also the goldfish plant, also known as the kissing mouth, which is rather unknown in this country. The plant, which originates from South America, gets its name because its fish-shaped flowers resemble a goldfish or an open mouth.

The leathery, shiny leaves of the goldfish plant are reminiscent of the money tree, which is not related to the houseplant. Bright orange, eye-catching flowers that appear from spring to fall are the focus of beauty. Best of all, Nematanthus, as it is called in Latin, is easy to care for. Nevertheless, you should consider the following:

  • The Kissable Mouth likes a room temperature between 18 and 28 degrees. In winter, however, you should keep the plant a little cooler so that it blooms again in spring.
  • The tropical plant likes it bright, but not sunny. A suitable location on the windowsill is therefore ideal.
  • In spring and summer, it should be watered daily, in winter only when the soil has dried out.
  • With proper care, the goldfish plant can live up to a decade, as Homify.de knows.

Proper watering

Never water the goldfish plant with ice-cold water, but with room temperature water. This allows it to absorb and recycle the water better.

If you want to propagate the plant, you're in luck, because it's very easy. According to Homify.de, you cut off the top of the stem after flowering or during maintenance pruning of the plant, remove the leaves, and then simply plant the tip in some soil.
