Last July, Manhattan architect Rex Heuermann was accused of killing at least three young women, whose remains were found on a beach called Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York, in 2010. And now, as reported by the New York Times, he has also been indicted for the murder of a fourth girl, the last of the 'Gilgo Four'.

The affair is considered one of the most intricate cold cases of the last decade. Prosecutors last summer named Heuermann, 60, as the prime suspect in the murder of the fourth victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, a 25-year-old from Norwich, Connecticut, who disappeared in 2007, but the indictment was delayed pending the results of DNA tests.

As for the other three victims, after a long and complex investigation, the man was nailed by DNA taken from a slice of pizza that matched that found on the remains of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. "He's a demon walking among us," Suffolk County Police Chief Rodney Harrison called him, revealing that he suspected the gunman was ready to strike again.

The architect, who appeared in court immediately after his arrest last July, pleaded not guilty, bursting into tears, while his lawyer described him as "distraught" by the allegations.
