Many supermarket customers now have to change – especially if they are meat and sausage lovers.

Because a manufacturer is now significantly changing its product.

Kassel – Is it better to use a vegan meat substitute instead of sausage in the supermarket?

Studies have shown that meat consumption is bad for the environment for years.

Researchers from Great Britain, for example, have found out how much influence nutrition actually has on the climate.

Vegans caused around half less, for example in terms of greenhouse gases, water consumption and impacts on land use.

What also became clear, however, was that there was a big difference between people who consumed less than 100 grams of meat per day versus more than 100 grams.

Quite motivating study results to reduce your own meat consumption at least a little.

This can start in the supermarket, because a manufacturer is now eliminating a meat product in favor of the vegan alternative.

However, the reactions are divided.

Change in the supermarket: Manufacturer Rügenwalder Mühle is eliminating a well-known product - and is opting for a vegan alternative

The manufacturer Rügenwalder Mühle, which offers its products in many supermarkets such as Rewe and Edeka, is now taking another step away from offering meat.

A well-known product is now only available there in a vegan version.

As a press release shows, the ham pickers are now only available on a plant basis.

The change applies immediately; production will be switched over at the end of 2023.

“By discontinuing the ham spicker, production capacity will be freed up, which will be used for the vegan puff cut in the future,” says the press release.

Rügenwalder Mühle is not alone in this.

Rewe is not the only one constantly expanding its portfolio and, in addition to classic sausage products, also offers vegetarian and vegan alternatives.

Aldi, Lidl and Co. are reducing prices for vegan alternatives

The discounters Aldi and Lidl have also recently increased their focus on vegan and vegetarian products.

For example, Lidl decided to offer vegan products at the same price as comparable meat products.

Aldi and other providers also took this step.

Rügenwalder Mühle's change doesn't please all supermarket customers

The response to Rügenwalder Mühle's latest step is largely positive in the Facebook post announcing the change.

“Vegans who celebrate a “meat company”... You couldn’t imagine it.,” says one user happily.

Many others praise the move.

But there are also critical voices from fans of the “old” ham pickers.

“There’s nothing like real, authentic sausage,” comments one.

Another rages: “Goodbye, Rügenwalder Mühle, you’ve lost me as a customer forever.”

In so-called Veganuary, as the trend is called, many meat eaters are also trying out a vegan diet.

For example, you can easily replace eggs when cooking with some common foods.
