The Bundestag has approved a reform of the citizenship law which will allow people to obtain German nationality more quickly, also extending the right to have a double passport (so far reserved only for EU and Swiss citizens).

Five years of residence in Germany will therefore be enough, and no longer the 8 needed up to now, to apply for German citizenship.
With this reform "we say to all those who live and work in Germany, often for decades and who respect our laws, that they are at home here. You belong to Germany," Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a video message.
